Caffi Glas
Caffi Glas ("the blue cafe") is Portmeirion's most
recent addition, having opened on 2nd April 2007. It is an Italian
style cafe serving pizzas, pasta, paninis and pastries. There are
30 covers inside as well as outside tables on the terrace opposite
the Ship Shop. The cafe is open daily from 10.00 to 17.00 but is
closed on Thursdays and Fridays from November to March.
The pizzas and other dishes are all prepared on site from good
quality fresh ingreditents and baked in the open plan pizza oven
behind the main counter. Caffi Glas aims to priovide good quality
food at reasonable prices with good service in a pleasant and
comfortable environment.
he Italiant theme ties in with Portmeirion's image
as an "Italianate village". During the 1960s and early 1970s there
was an Italian restaurant called The Salutation locatec in what is
now part of The Ship Shop next door to Caffi Glas. Caffi Glas has
an espresso machine and a selection on Italian wines as well as
soft drinks, fresh orange juice and a children's menu.
The cafe can be hired for private parties and with prior
arrangement can be hired for private use in the evenings as
well.
It was originally a corrugated iron garage called the "Gipsy
Garage", built by Clough Williams-Ellis in the 1950s as a garage
for guests' cars. Later on it was used as a tool shed for the
gardens but had fallen into disrepair. As it was built on a slope
it had three different floor levels which was a disadvantage in
finding a use for the building. It had been given a Grade II
listing by CADW (Welsh Historic Monumnets) and listed building
consent was required to adapt it for use as a cafe. Proper
foundations had to be dug which made a single floor level possible
throughout the building.
