First Minister officially opens Angel Ices

First Minister Carwyn Jones visited Portmeirion on Thursday 29th May to officially open Caffi'r Angel during a series of visits in Gwynedd. Caffi'r Angel has been backed by the Welsh Government's Tourism Investement Support Scheme, and has created 5 full time jobs. CaffiProsecco a hufen Ia Angel has a daily selection of gelato ice cream available, which are all freshly made on the premises using only locally produced milk and cream supplied by South Caernarfon Creameries.

The First Minister said 'As well as stunning scenery and excellent facilities, North Wales also has a wealth of good quality local produce which provides a boost for the local economy and attracts visitors to the area.

The gelateria Caffi'r Angel is an excellent added attraction to Portmeirion and I am pleased that the Welsh Government was able to support it through the Tourism Investment Support Scheme creating five five jobs directly related to the production of the gelato. It is also supporting local producers by sourcing milk and cream from the nearby South Caernarfon Creameries.'

During his visit to Caffi'r Angel the First Minister tried his hand at producing some gelato, using Penderyn Welsh Whisky and Welsh Honey.Cynhyrchu

A taste of Italy in Wales

Portmeirion opened its first  authentic Italian style gelateria on Friday 11th April. 

Caffi'r Angel  has a daily selection of gelato ice cream available, all freshly made on the premises using only locally produced milk and cream supplied by South Caernarfon Creameries

The development was made possible through Visit Wales's Tourism Investment Support Scheme and has led to the creation of five full time jobs directly related to gelato production.  

TondaGelato production started on 11th April 2014 and this has introduce the authentic taste of Italian gelato to Portmeirion, a perfect match for the Italianate ambience of the village.

The gelato is served on sugar waffle cones using the traditional spatula to shape the gelato in true Italian style.

Gelato is churned at a slower speed than ice cream creating a denser product because not so much air is whipped into the mixture.

It also has a lower fat content than ice cream and doesn't coat the mouth in the same way so the flavours are more intense.

Caffi'r Angel takes its name from the Angel cottage in which it is situated. This was the first cottage to be built by Clough Williams-Ellis at Portmeirion soon after he acquired the site in 1925.

The bookshop that previously occupied the site has been relocated  across the street in theRheolwyr Arches building.

In addition to freshly made gelato Caffi'r Angel has an espresso bar with pastries, cakes and gateaux and is fully licensed, offering a range of Italian wines and Prosecco all by the glass.

The interiors design is by Sian Llywelyn. Benchmark Furniture made the leather upholstered banquettes and stools and the polished steel framed mirror panels. The colour sheme is white, polished steel and mint green with floors of dark riven Meirionethshire slate.  All the production equipment was supplied by Carpigiani, the world's leading manufacturer  of gelato equipment. The service counters and back bar were made by Counterfit Ltd.

A carrettino or mobile gelato cart has been imported from Italy to create a gelato bar on the Salutation terrace.
