Grotto
Immediately below Cliff House, reached via steps from the
Gate House and through a slate
archway, is the cliff top Rotunda or Grotto (1960,
listed Grade II 1971). This comprises a lookout platform above a
shell Grotto. This semi-circular single storey flat topped
structure with central Astrolabe was built to add an intriguing
item to the Portmeirion panorama from the sea, and also provides a
commanding viewing platform overlooking the whole estuary. Seen
from the sea it resembles a defensive bunker or look out post
guarding the shoreline. The shell grotto contrived beneath it has
five openings and its walls and ceiling are inlaid with a profusion
of local shells. A path leads from the Grotto through the cliffside
woods down some quite steep steps through several loggias to the
shoreline pathway and the Amis Reunis stone
boat.
